Achieving a Pinterest-worthy nursery on a tight budget

Let’s be reals for a moment. We find out a little human is joining the family and we click straight onto Pinterest and start scrolling through the gorgeous nurseries on display. Or, if you’re like me, you go to certain beautiful Instagram pages and dream of what your little one’s bedroom could look like. And then you realize you have a budget and nursery envy sets in. 

You’re welcoming a little person into the world and the nesting feels are strong. You want a gorgeous room and you want it all. The beautiful two tone crib, the matching compactum, the vinyl stickers with cutesy quote, the teepee tent and the gorgeous rocking chair with matching foot stool. 

Here are 5 tips for creating a dream nursery on a tight budget:

1) Work with the space you have

Seems obvious, doesn’t it? But when you’re buying furniture, keep in mind the size of your nursery. Nunu’s room is tiny. 2.5m x 2.2m. We couldn’t fit a rocking chair into the room. So we kept it simple, we bought only the necessities. We found our crib and compactum on sale at Furnicraft. 

2) Floating shelves

Floating shelves are all the rage right now, but can also set you back a pretty penny. I was surprised to find a wide range of shelves at really affordable prices at Mr Price Home. 

3) Vinyl stickers

For these, have a good look around before buying. Vinyls are relatively inexpensive to make, but companies are charging the earth for it! Choose something that will fit in with your theme and can be kept up for awhile - that your child won’t outgrow.

4) The perfect rug

You’ve got to have a rug. I hunted high and low for the perfect rug and then ended up choosing the first one I’d seen at Mr Price Home. Ours is really fluffy and great for those cold mornings during nappy changes! 

5) Paint an accent wall

What an amazing trick! This adds such a nice touch to a nursery (or any room for that matter!) It’s also relatively cheap as you only have to paint one wall! You can choose to go light or dark. We chose to go with a dark blue. It adds depth to a smaller room and draws your eye to a focal point. I was lucky as a friend made me matching bunting as a baby shower gift, and this goes really well with the wall colour.
