Where can I eat with a kid?

So, until recently, this wasn't a problem that featured on my radar. Suddenly I'm picking restaurants based on their "kid friendliness". Nunu obviously isn't going to be climbing the monkey bars anytime soon, but it's nice to know that if he decides to have a screaming fit, I won't get dirty looks from management. Also, my friends have older toddlers who need some entertainment when we're out. I must say, this lunching business on maternity leave is awesome.

In no specific order, here are some kid friendly restaurants that serve pretty good food. (I tested them all out myself!)

1) Rhodes Memorial Restaurant, Newlands

Nothing beats the picturesque views. The shady playground is set away from the eating area, so it's better for older kids. The food is good value for money. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was delicious.

2) Sostanza, Lakeside

There is a small inside play area for kids which is great for rainy days. The service is average, but the food is delicious and has a real homemade feel. I would suggest ordering the cheese burger.

3) Stodels Café, Constantia

A beautiful setting on Doordrift Road- you can do your plant/garden shopping and have a bite to eat at the same time. There is a small jungle gym for the kids to play on and the food is extremely reasonably priced. Service is friendly and welcoming!

4) Little Streams, Constantia

What a hidden gem! Nestled in the dappled shade, you will find this quaint restaurant. No jungle gym (nor baby changing facilities, much to my dismay) but the kids will enjoy running around the lawn and splashing in the stream below the restaurant. There is a picnic area too. Prices are very reasonable and the service was good.

5) Ocean Basket, Westlake

This great little center has a number of restaurants that are kid friendly and linked to a secure outdoor play area. Hubby and I are huge fans of Ocean Basket and usually order the same thing every time- a platter for two. The food isn't anything fancy, but they give you value for your bucks and you'll never be disappointed with the speedy service.

6) Bob's Bagel, Kalk Bay

I love this little bistro! Order your delicious bagel and coffee at the counter and then stroll across to the gorgeous park across the lane. You can laze on a picnic blanket under a shady tree and the waitress will bring your order to you once it's ready. There is also limited seating available at the park. The bagels are generously portioned and it has some of the best coffee I've tasted.

7) Open Door, Constantia Uitsig

Feel like an afternoon of lazing under the dappled shade, sipping a glass of ice cold vino, while your kids play happily on an incredible playground? Then look no further than Open Door. My friend and I did the R50 wine tasting - you can choose any 3 wines to taste. We highly recommend their sauvignon blanc! The view, venue and great service make this one of my favourite kid-friendly spots on my list. The only downside are the exhorbitant prices. A kiddies toasted sandwich during "community hour" will set you back R60. Main meals are also quite pricey. The playground entrance is not easily accessible from the restaurant which is problematic if you have smaller kids.

8) Backyard Café, Heathfield

This hidden little garden cafe is situated in a cute, homey, sun-splashed garden. The relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for kids to run around. The food is delicious and prices are reasonable.

9) Ellie's Deli, Noordhoek

There is a fantastic little play area for kids and the whole set up is lovely in the garden. Menu is diverse and the food was delicious.

10) Jonkershuis, Groot Constantia

Visualize the following: beautiful vineyards, green lawns, a spectacular view and historical buildings. This restaurant may be a little pricey, but is definitely worth your while. Your kids can play right in front of you, while you enjoy a glass of their delicious wine. There is also a duck pond, so don't forget to bring some bread crumbs! We went for an early dinner and had the rump steak with exotic mushroom sauce which was absolutely divine!
